If you choose to use Name Tags for facial recognition, be aware that with the discontinuation of Picasa Web Albums, name tags applied to photos won't display in Google Photos because Google Photos has it's own automatic facial recognition feature. Picasa is free to download, and Picasa Web Albums provides 1 gigabyte of free storage - thats enough space for 4,000 wallpaper-size photos. Go to Tools > Options > General tab - for Automatic updates select "Don't check for updates," click OK Go to Tools > Options > File Types tab and select everything so all photos and videos will be displayed in Picasa click OK. Under View > Thumbnail Caption, choose "Filename" Under View, select "Small Pictures" and "Hidden Pictures" Go back to View > Folder View and select "Sort by Name" Tree View is how your folders are displayed in Windows In Picasa3, go to View > Folder View and change the default "Flat Folder View" to "Tree View" Click Settings to change the Photo size of uploads. Google Photos Backup is a separate program on your computer which you can access by clicking the pinwheel icon in your Notifications Area of Windows. In the Folder Manager, folders may have a green check mark for "Scan Once" - change that to "Scan Always"įor files you want scanned from an external drive, see How to move pictures to an external hard disk You can always make selections later at Tools > Folder Manager. If you have pictures or videos anywhere besides that folder, then choose those other folders as well. So, if you are using the Picasa desktop application to manage your photo collection locally, then you may continue doing so after Google ends support for the program and shuts down Picasa Web Albums.Choose the discs or folders to be scanned (displayed by Picasa), such as your "My Pictures" or "Pictures" folder on your computer. While Google may keep it up after it shuts it down, you may want to have a backup of it at hand should you require one. I suggest you download Picasa from the official website to have local access to the installer. This won't make a difference for Picasa users who use the photo management software to manage their photos locally only. The majority are local-features only though and they will continue working as they don't depend on the use of online storage or a Google account.įeatures that may stop working eventually include ordering prints, some of the upload features, and some features that require Google account integration. Some features may stop working, especially those linked to Picasa Web Albums. For those who have already downloaded this—or choose to do so before this date—it will continue to work as it does today, but we will not be developing it further, and there will be no future updates. Picasa was a cross-platform image organizer and image viewer for organizing and editing digital photos, integrated with a now defunct photo-sharing website, originally created by a company named Lifescape (which at that time was incubated by Idealab) in 2002. Retiring means that the company won't support it in any way after Marc 15, 2016. It is unclear however how long this new platform will be kept alive, and likely that Google will terminate it eventually.Īs far as the desktop program is concerned, it too will be retired by Google. Google plans to provide users who don't want to migrate to the company's new Google Photos platform with a read-only version supporting features that Picasa Web Albums supports but Google Photos does not.
